I Am Alive
Rinko Sagara
I am alive right now.
Treading on the land giving me the mantle’s heat.
Receiving pleasant wet breeze all over my body.
My nostril feels the smell of grass.
My ears hear the sound of sea from far away.
I am alive right now.
What a beautiful island I am alive in.
Shining blue sea.
Shining waves break against rocks and splash.
Bleating goats.
Whisper of our brooks.
Path toward our fields.
Sprouting our greenest hills.
Tender sound of our San-shin (Okinawan traditional stringed instrument).
The hot sun keeps on staring me.
What a beautiful island where I grew up.
With my all sensory organs, with my sensitivities,
I feel my island. My heart becomes hot gradually.
In this moment, I am alive.
This wonderful moment.
This beloved moment.
They come down to peaceful “Now” and penetrate my whole body.
How can I express my feelings?
The feelings filled my heart.
My precious “Now”.
My indispensable “Now”.
In this “Now”, I am alive.
Seventy-third years ago,
On that day, my beloved island became island of dead.
The songs of little birds changed into screams of terror.
The tender sounds of San-shin vanished in the roar of bombing.
Our boundless blue sky was covered with iron rain.
The smell of grass was contaminated by the smell of dead.
Shining sea was filled with a lot of battleships.
Soldiers fired flamethrowers. Children cried.
Burnt houses. Smell of powder.
Our land trembled by bombardments.
Our sea was filled with blood.
People had been destroyed like monsters.
That hell, that unforgettable memory of war.
Everybody was alive in that time.
Everybody was alive like me.
They were the life trying as hard as they could.
Without suspicion, they must have pictured their own lives, their own future.
They have family.
They have fellows.
They have significant other.
They devoted their vocation.
They had something to live for.
They rejoiced in daily small happiness. They cooperated each other.
They were the human like me.
But, they were destroyed and robbed.
“They lived in that times”. Just that is why.
So innocent lives had been destroyed.
So their ordinary and peaceful days had been destroyed.
Now I am standing on Mabuni Hills.
Just below my eyes, the calm sea spreads to the horizon.
With sad and unforgettable memories of my island,
I swear clenching my fist tightly.
Remembering the robbed lives, I swear it sincerely.
As long as I am alive, I do not allow all kinds of war sacrificing a lot of lives.
I do not allow our sad “Past” revives as “Future” again.
Every borders, every races, every religions, every interests. Overcoming every difficulties, people all over the world can live together peacefully.
I devote myself to realize it.
Anybody are not allowed to interfere with other life, with taking care of life.
I devote myself to create that kind of the world.
I make my best efforts to create the peace.
You can feel it, can’t you?
The beauty of this island.
And you must know it.
The sadness of this island.
Together with me, you are alive in this moment.
Together with me, you are alive right now.
So I believe you can figure them out.
On the meaninglessness of war. On the true peace.
Not with your head but with your heart, you must figure them out.
Taking advantage of silly military force, we never gain the genuine peace.
The peace is the life itself. The peace is to live naturally.
The peace is to brighten our lives as possible as we can.
I am alive in the present.
I am alive with everybody.
And I will live my own life as ever.
Taking care of my life day by day.
Remembering peace. Praying for peace.
Our “Future” is an extension of this moment.
In other words, our “Future” is our “Now”.
My precious island.
Everybody’s proud island.
My friends, my family, and all lives in my island.
In this island, you are alive in the present with me.
Together with you, I would like to live my life as ever.
From this beautiful home in blue, I would like to launch the genuine peace.
Come on, everybody. Let’s start to walk to the future!
The wind of Mabuni Hills is blowing me.
My heart is sounding.
“Past”, “Future”, and “Now” are resonating in this moment.
Our requiem, get to our sorrowful past.
Our songs of life, sound in our coming future.
I am alive in the present.
